Meet Yesenia Salas
Describe your job here at the Aquarium.
My focus is on Hispanic marketing and I also oversee and manage our promotional events that take place at the Aquarium.
What did you study?
I went to the University of California, San Diego, and majored in communications with an emphasis in PR and advertising.
"I enjoy talking to people and communicating with people. Working in marketing gives me the chance to do that."
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy talking to people and communicating with people. Working in marketing gives me the chance to do that. It gives me an opportunity to network, which includes going to conferences.
What does your job entail?
I focus on marketing the Aquarium brand outside the Aquarium doors—we get people to visit. Being bilingual, I get to work at a lot of the promotional events like Fiesta del Mar and Día del Niño. It's really exciting for me because I'm on the Aquarium floor for a day—I get to work with little kids in the craft room, and with their parents at the event booth to give them basic information on what the day is about and why they're here.
What's your advice for students interested in your career?
I would say just go for it! I initially wanted to work in the Marketing Department—that was my goal. After I graduated from college, I took a job at the Aquarium in Guest Experience. Then from there I moved to Membership, and then to Sales & Reservations and then I was offered the Marketing position. A lot of organizations give folks an opportunity to branch out and learn.
Who do you normally work with at the Aquarium?
Aside from my other colleagues in Marketing, I work with Public Relations on a daily basis to help with events. For example, if any type of local news reporter wants to come in and someone from PR is not on site, I help with that. I act as the escort while they're recording, taking pictures or interviewing, making sure that they're representing the Aquarium properly. So that's cool—I get a little taste of another world.
